Did the Sheep Eat Halo-halo during Christmas? The Climate in Bethlehem during December by Jubernson Alabastro, CFD-Davao

Bethlehem’s Field of Flowers during December
One pastor said that it is impossible for Christ to be born on December 25 or any day of December because it is winter and hence, there is snow. According to the gospel account in Luke 2:8, there were shepherds out in the field to keep watch over their flock; if that is the case, added this fourth magi who was probably left out by his companions who paid tribute and offered gifts to the Messiah (Matthew 2:11), it is impossible for Christ to be born on December because “SHEEP DO NOT EAT HALO-HALO! Some Protestant Pastors further claim that it is too cold for shepherds to be out that night herding their sheep. The only time when Shepherds do that, they say, is during lambing. How should Catholics answer these charges?

It is very true that December is winter time in Bethlehem or in Jerusalem. In fact, John 10:22 says that it was winter during the Feast of Dedication or Feast of the Light. The said feast is celebrated by the Jews during the 25th day of Chislev or December (1 Macc. 5:52); it marks the cleansing of the temple under the Maccabees and re-dedicating it to God and hence, it coincides with Christmas. But the problem with our Protestant friends is that, when they read that it was winter, they immediately concluded that the place must have been covered with snow! In logic, this fallacy is called the Confusion of the Absolute and Qualified Statement, that is, using a principle that is restricted in its applicability as though it were absolutely universal principle, and thus applying it to cases for which it was not intended [1] In America for example, though it is winter time during December, there are places which do not experience snow such as California. The same thing can be said about Bethlehem that although it is winter and cold, there is no snow covering the area during December. According to the International Station Meteorological Climate Summary (ISMCS,) the average temperature in Bethlehem is 49 Fahrenheit[2]. The average low i.e. during nighttime is 43 Fahrenheit[3] Therefore it is a mild winter, and not an icy winter, that occurs in Bethlehem during the month of December; so to our dearly separated brethren, the HALO-HALO argument is now a melted argument!

Christmas coincides with the Feast of Dedication or the Feast of the light of the Jewish people and for good reason: This Jewish feast has found new meaning with the birth of the Messiah as He is the True light of the world who overcomes the darkest period of man (John 1:4-7, 9 – Compare to Psalm 36:9; John 12:46; Wis 7:26; Heb. 1:3,) just as Judas Maccabees came to save the Jews during the darkest day of the year (Chislev or December 25) at the darkest time of Jewish history (1 Macc 4.) Unfortunately there are those who do not appreciate the significance of this important celebration which marks the coming of the light into our lives; the reason being as what St. John perfectly described in his epistle, “And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. (John 3:19-20)
Too cold for shepherds to go out during December night?

The issue that it is too cold for shepherds to go out during December night is partially addressed above. The temperature, as mentioned earlier, is tolerable for shepherds to withstand the coldness of the night. Moreover, Harper’s Encyclopedia of Bible Life [(C) 1971, pg. 7] explains that what is unique about Israel’s weather is that, winter season is NOT the “dead” season when plants die because of low temperature. On the contrary, it is the time of year when dormant vegetations are revived after the “dead” season of summer by the intermittent winter rains starting in mid-October and ending in mid-March. This being the case, and considering that the surrounding land just went through the dry season, depriving the sheep of sufficient food for months, it is very likely and logical that the shepherds would let their sheep out in the field during this season of revived vegetation so as to feed their flock.
Furthermore whether it is dry or winter season is irrelevant because the Shepherd’s job continue nevertheless, even during cold and sleepless nights:
Gen 31:40 How often the scorching heat ravaged me by day, and the frost by night, while sleep fled from my eyes!
The reason why shepherds must remain on guard regardless of the season is because of the dangers that his sheep and goats might encounter:
1 Sam. 17:34-35 Then David told Saul: Your servant used to tend his father’s sheep, and whenever a lion or bear came to carry off a sheep from the flock, (35) I would go after it and attack it and rescue the prey from its mouth. If it attacked me, I would seize it by the jaw, strike it, and kill it.
Isaiah 31:4 Thus says the LORD to me: As a lion or a lion cub growling over its prey, With a band of shepherds assembled against it, Is neither frightened by their shouts nor disturbed by their noise, So shall the LORD of hosts come down to wage war upon the mountain and hill of Zion.
Jeremiah 5:6 Therefore lions from the forest slay them, wolves of the desert ravage them, Leopards keep watch round their cities: all who come out are torn to pieces For their many crimes and their numerous rebellions.
Amos 3:12 Thus says the LORD: As the shepherd snatches from the mouth of the lion a pair of legs or the tip of an ear of his sheep, So the Israelites who dwell in Samaria shall escape with the corner of a couch or a piece of a cot.
Aside from these dangers, shepherds must constantly guide their sheep because they do not possess the same instinct that other animals have. For example:
Sheep are helpless and have to be led to their food by their shepherd. The love of God for His people is likened to a shepherd’s love for his flock.
Psalm 23:1-2 A psalm of David. I The LORD is my shepherd; there is nothing I lack. (2) In green pastures you let me graze; to safe waters you lead me;
Numbes 27:17 who shall act as their leader in all things, to guide them in all their actions; that the LORD’S community may not be like sheep without a shepherd. (Compare with John 10)
Sheep do not also know their way home and must be led again by the shepherds.
Ezekiel 34:6-8 and wandered over all the mountains and high hills; my sheep were scattered over the whole earth, with no one to look after them or to search for them. (7) Therefore, shepherds, hear the word of the LORD: (8) As I live, says the Lord GOD, because my sheep have been given over to pillage, and because my sheep have become food for every wild beast, for lack of a shepherd; because my shepherds did not look after my sheep, but pastured themselves and did not pasture my sheep;
Ezekiel 34:12 As a shepherd tends his flock when he finds himself among his scattered sheep, so will I tend my sheep. I will rescue them from every place where they were scattered when it was cloudy and dark.
These people who argue that it is too cold for shepherds going out during the night of December and that the watching of flocks at nighttime is done only during lambing, are not true “Pastors” in the biblical sense of the word! Otherwise they would have known the responsibility required of a true shepherd! These people are hired men who will leave the sheep behind once a wolf comes in (John 10:12-13; Isaiah 56:10-11; Ezek. 34:8,10; Zec. 11:15,17)
Not Celebrating Christmas, totally new?
Is the practice of not celebrating Christmas totally new? There is an interesting meaning I found out why St. John wrote “winter” in John 10:22 which might explain the “dissenting opinion” in celebrating Christmas. The following were taken from The Great commentary of Cornelius à Lapide on John 10:22:
“St. Cyril said, “winter” was said in order to give the reason why Jesus walked in the Porch (John 10:23), so as to be under cover or stay away from the cold. Mystically there is here signified (says the Gloss) the coldness of the Jews, who draw not near to the fire, i.e. who believe not in Christ.
St.Augustine says, “The Jews were cold in charity and love, and were burning with eagerness to do hurt; they approached Him not as followers, but pressed on Him as persecutors.” “Do thou also,” says Theophylact, “while it is winter, that is while this present life is shaken with the whirlwinds of iniquity, keep the spiritual dedication feast, by daily renewing thyself, and by ordering the ascensions of thy heart.” Christ will be present to thee in Solomon’s Porch, making for thee a peaceable resting-place.
The Halo-halo argument reflects the coldness of hearts that some of our Protestant brethrens have in not welcoming our Savior into the world and their burning desire to discredit the bride of Christ, the Catholic Church. It is the same attitude shown by the Jews during the Feast of Dedication. It is the same experience that Jesus underwent in looking for a place to stay during his birth. In other words, it is the same cold December breeze that greeted our Lord in those two events! Yes my dear brethren, rejecting Christmas is not totally a new thing! To borrow one of our brethren’s favorite expressions, it is in fact, “WRITTEN!’ It is written that THE FIRST CHRISTMAS WAS A REJECTION OF CHRISTMAS!
Luke 2:7 and she gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
Matthew 2:16 When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. May we not reject our Lord in His very special day, the way he was rejected at his first coming. May we welcome the light into our hearts so that we too might walk in the light (John 12:35) and become the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). As we walk in the light, may the Holy Spirit dwell into our body, His temple, and cleanse it from the different pagan gods of pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony, and sloth just as Judas Maccabees cleansed the Jewish temple of its pagan gods.
MAY ALL OF YOU HAVE A BLESSED MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR! GOD LOVES YOU!

ADDENDUM by Fr. Abe Arganiosa, CRS

It is also to be noted that December is perfect for Shepherds to guard their sheep because it is lambing season. And the Jewish shepherds were and still are very careful to guard their sheep during the lambing season because they have make it sure that lambs are born without defects and that injury to the ewes must be avoided. Otherwise, they will no longer be pleasing to God for Sacrifices and for Passover Meals.

Here comes the perfect harmony between Nature and the Divine Plan of God and the Liturgy of the Church: JESUS CHRIST — THE LAMB OF GOD — WAS BORN IN THE CLIMAX OF THE LAMBING SEASON.

The claims of Iglesia ni Cristo [INC] pastors and that of Eliseo Soriano that it is impossible for Jesus to be born in December because during this Season the Field of Bethlehem is covered with snow is actually based on Practical Ignorance of the Geography and Climate of the Holy Land. CHRISTMAS APOLOGETICS: THE BIBLICAL FOUNDATION FOR DECEMBER 25 AS THE BIRTH OF OUR LORD! Part 1 The Desire of All Nations

* This argument for the Biblical Foundation of December 25 based on the Prophecy of Haggai actually came from Bro. Mars Llasos, one of the premier Catholic Apologists in the Philippines. Further details and analysis have been added by Fr. Abe, CRS to support his interpretation of the Biblical text of the Prophet Haggai which is actually universally acclaimed in the liturgical life of both Catholics and Protestants. Our gratitude to our beloved and much admired Atty. Marwil Llasos.

The Adoration of the Magi by Fra Angelico

* Please bear in mind that the date Dec. 25 is not considered by the Catholic Church as the exact date of the Birth of the Messiah. We don’t know exactly the date of the Lord’s Birth. However, the Catholic Church has chosen Dec. 25-January 6 as the celebration of the Nativity of the Lord not because of the pagan festival honoring the Sun-God but because of Biblical and Historical Reasons testified by the early Christian authors and documents. Here are some of those reasons:

The Prophecy of the Prophet Haggai
Haggai 2:7-10 (King James Version)

7And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts. 8The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, saith the LORD of hosts. 9The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts. 10In the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, came the word of the LORD by Haggai the prophet, saying,

Take note that Haggai 2:7 prophesied that “The desire of all nations will come”. Who is the desire of all nations? THE MESSIAH. This is undoubtedly a Messianic prophecy. And both Protestants and Catholics recognize this. In fact, Protestants immortalized this belief in their classic Christmas songs composed by Charles Wesley – the co-founder of Methodist Church. One of those citations is found in the lyrics of HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING:

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing” is a Christmas hymn or carol written by Charles Wesley, the brother of John Wesley and his co-founder of Methodist Church and, by implication, all of the many denominations that flowed out of the revival that was Methodism.

This great hymn of the Faith first appeared in a work entitled Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739. The original opening couplet was “Hark! how all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings”. The version known today is the result of alterations by various hands, most notably George Whitfield, Wesley’s co-worker, who changed the opening couplet to the familiar one we know today. [Source: Wikipedia]

Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King;

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled!”

Joyful, all ye nations rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

With th’angelic host proclaim,

“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Refrain

Hark! The herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest Heav’n adored;

Christ the everlasting Lord;

Late in time, behold Him come,

Offspring of a virgin’s womb.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

Hail th’incarnate Deity,

Pleased with us in flesh to dwell,

Jesus our Emmanuel.

Refrain

Hail the heav’nly Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,

Ris’n with healing in His wings.

Mild He lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die.

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Refrain

Come, Desire of nations, come,

Fix in us Thy humble home;

Rise, the woman’s conqu’ring Seed,

Bruise in us the serpent’s head.

Now display Thy saving power,

Ruined nature now restore;

Now in mystic union join

Thine to ours, and ours to Thine.

Refrain

Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface,

Stamp Thine image in its place:

Second Adam from above,

Reinstate us in Thy love.

Let us Thee, though lost, regain,Thee,

the Life, the inner man:

O, to all Thyself impart,

Formed in each believing heart.

Refrain

Fr. Abe and Bro. Franz answering questions about Christmas in The Splendor of the Church TV program
It is very obvious that John Wesley cited the prophecy of the Prophet Haggai almost verbatim and at the same time admitted that Jesus is the Seed of the Woman referred to by God the Father in Genesis 3:15. Thus, the head of Methodist Church accepted the Catholic position that the Proto-Evangelion [Gen 3:15] is actually a prophecy referring to Jesus [The Woman’s Seed], Mary [The Woman], Satan [The Serpent] and Sin [The Serpent’s Seed].

Another Christmas Hymn of Charles Wesley:

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus

Text: Charles Wesley, 1707-1788
Music: Rowland H. Pritchard;
harm. from The English Hymnal
Tune: HYFRYDOL, Meter: 87.87 D

1. Come, thou long expected Jesus,
born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us,
let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation,
joy of every longing heart.
2. Born thy people to deliver,
born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever,
now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit,
raise us to thy glorious throne
· Note 1: The English speaking Roman Catholics are also singing this song in their Liturgical Prayers. This is contained in the Volume 1 [ADVENT SEASON] of the Roman Breviary in English for priests, religious and the consecrated persons.
· Note 2: The Roman Catholics are also expressing the same thoughts in their liturgical prayers. For instance, the much beloved Hymn for Advent Liturgy: O COME, O COME EMMANUEL. This Hymn is written originally in Latin [12th century] but the English translation used by both Lutherans and English speaking Catholics is the one done by John Neal, published in 1854. It also recognizes Jesus = The Emmanuel as “The Desire of the Nations”. Lutherans testify to this belief in their classic and internationally famous Hymnal:

The favourite O Come, O Come Emmanuel carol was originally written in Latin text in the 12th Century. The author of the words and composer to the music of O Come, O Come Emmanuel is unknown. It is, however believed that the melody was of French origin and added to the text a hundred years later. The Latin was translated into English by John Mason Neale in 1851.
Music: Veni Emmanuel, from a 15th Century processional of French Franciscan nuns (the setting for the funeral hymn Libera me); arranged by Thomas Helmore in the Hymnal Noted, Part II (London: 1856).
The lyrics echo a number of prophetic themes. The title comes from the well known Isaiah 7:14: “Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Immanuel is Hebrew for “God with us.” The “Rod of Jesse” refers to Isaiah 11:1: “There shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse”; Jesse was the father of David, second king of Israel. “Day-Spring” comes from Zacharias, father of John the Baptist, in Luke 1:78: “The dayspring from on high has visited us.” “Thou Key of David” is in Isaiah 22:22: “The key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder,” which in turn refers to Isaiah 9:6 “The government shall be upon His shoulder.” The ‘Desire of the Nations’ of course is Haggai 2:7
O, Come, O, Come Emmanuel
Translated: John Mason Neale, 1818-66
O, come, O, come, Emmanuel,
And ransom captive Israel,
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.
Refrain:
Rejoice! Rejoice! O Israel,
to thee shall come Emmanuel

O, come, our Wisdom from on high,
Who ordered all things mightily;
To us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go. [Refrain]
O, come, O, come, our Lord of might,
Who to your tribes on Sinai’s height
In ancient times gave holy law,
In cloud and majesty and awe. [Refrain]

O, come O Rod of Jesse’s stem,
From ev’ry foe deliver them
That trust your mighty pow’r to save;
Bring them in vict’ry through the grave. [Refrain]
O, come, O Key of David, come,
And open wide our heav’nly home;
Make safe the way that leads on high,
And close the path to misery. [Refrain]
O, come, our Dayspring from on high,
And cheer us by your drawing nigh,
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
And death’s dark shadows put to flight. [Refrain]
O, come, Desire of nations, bind
In one the hearts of all mankind;
O, bid our sad divisions cease,
And be yourself our King of Peace. [Refrain]
Hymn # 31 from Lutheran Worship
Author: French Processional
Tune: Veni Emmanuel
1st Published in: 1854
Bro. Franz in Splendor of the Church
* Note 3: Another popular hymn which is purely Catholic in origin also expresses the belief that Jesus is ‘The Desire of the Nations’.

O Come, Divine Messiah!

Words: Abbé Simon J. Pellegrin, 1663-1745
English Translation of French Carol Venez Divin Messie
Translator: Sister Mary of St. Philip, SND

1. O come, divine Messiah!
The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph,
And sadness flee away.
2. Dear Savior haste;
Come, come to earth,
Dispel the night and show your face,
And bid us hail the dawn of grace.
3. O come, divine Messiah!
The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph,
And sadness flee away.
4. O Christ, whom nations sigh for,
Whom priest and prophet long foretold,
Come break the captive fetters;
Redeem the long-lost fold.
5. Dear Savior haste;
Come, come to earth,
Dispel the night and show your face,
And bid us hail the dawn of grace.
6. O come, divine Messiah!
The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph,
And sadness flee away.
7. You come in peace and meekness,
And lowly will your cradle be;
All clothed in human weakness
Shall we your Godhead see.
8. Dear Savior haste;
Come, come to earth,
Dispel the night and show your face,
And bid us hail the dawn of grace.
9. O come, divine Messiah!
The world in silence waits the day
When hope shall sing its triumph,
And sadness flee away.
This is a popular Advent hymn. It is often heard today in conservative and more traditional Catholic churches and in the Hymns for Advent in the volume 1 of the Christian Prayers or Breviary for Advent Season.

Haggai also wrote that God the Father promised that He will fill His House with Glory… That house is the Church as stated by St. Paul to Timothy [1 Timothy 3:15]. Thus, only the Catholic Church glories in the coming of the Messiah. We are the only one who joins the Angels, The Shepherds, The Magi and Mary with Joseph in having Blessed Happiness at the celebration of the Lord’s Birth. If there are Protestant groups doing so they only followed and imitated the Christmas celebrations of the Catholic Church. The Orthodox Christmas celebrations are actually Catholic Traditions since they were previously united to the See of Rome.
Haggai 2:8 God stresses that silver and gold belong to Him. So we honor the Lord by decorating the Church and our houses with silver bells and golden decors during the commemoration of the Lord’s Birth. It also corresponds to the fact that when Jesus was born gold was offered to him by the Wise Men [cf. Matthew 2:11].
Haggai 2:9 The glory of the Church is greater than the glory of Israel because the Church is Universal while Israel is but a single nation. And, Israel is the keeper of the Promise while the Church is the recepient of its Fulfillment.
The Nativity by El Greco

WHEN WILL THE DESIRE OF THE NATIONS COME?

Haggai 2:10 “In the four and 20th day of the ninth month” [Please bear in mind that the original Bible has no Chapters and Verses, they were such when the Council Fathers, the Bishops gathered in Nicaea in year 325 debated the celebration date for Christmas. So, the passage “In the 4 and 20th day of the ninth month” could be attached to Haggai 2:7-9 while “In the second year of Darius, came the word of the Lord by Haggai” could be another sentence.]

Now The Jewish Calendar starts in the month of Nisan [March-April, cf. ‘Passover’ in “Feasts”, J.D. Douglas & Merrill C. Tenney, NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible. Grand Rapids Michigan: Zondervan Corporation, Philippine Ed., p. 201.]. From Nisan [March-April] the 9th month falls to our DECEMBER. So, following this prophecy the Messiah will come into the House of God on 24th of December. Thus, the First Celebration of Christmas starts at the Solemn High Mass on eve of December 24 midnight.

Bro. Franz and Prof. Elmer Valenzuela, who joined us during the Special Program for Christmas Apologetics in Splendor of the Church

WHY MIDNIGHT?

Because another Biblical prophecy states that the Word of God, the Logos will come on earth on MIDNIGHT.

Wisdom 18:14-15 “For when gentle silence enveloped all things, and NIGHT IS IN ITS SWIFTCOURSE WAS NOW HALF-SPENT, Your all-powerful WORD LEAPED FROM HEAVEN, FROM THE ROYAL THRONE, into the midst of the land that was doomed, a stern warrior.” [New Revised Standard Version, cf. Revised Standard Version and New American Bible]

In Filipino: “Payapa at tahimik ang lahat, NANGANGALAHATI NA ANG GABI…” [Magandang Balita Biblia]

This prophecy is accepted by Protestants because they adapted it in their prayers and worship as testified by their traditional song which is universally acclaimed:

It Came Upon A Midnight Clear!

It Came Upon a Midnight Clear was written by Edmund Hamilton Sears in 1849. The carol started life as a poem written by its author who was a minister living in Massachusetts at the time. The music for It Came Upon A Midnight Clear was composed by American musician Richard Storrs Willis in 1859 who was inspired by the words of the poem.

It came upon the midnight clear,
That glorious song of old,
From angels bending near the earth,
To touch their harps of gold:
“Peace on the earth, goodwill to men
From heavens all gracious King!
“The world in solemn stillness lay
To hear the angels sing.
Still through the cloven skies they come,
With peaceful wings unfurled;
And still their heavenly music floats
O’er all the weary world:
Above its sad and lowly plains
They bend on hovering wing,
And ever o’er its Babel sounds
The blessed angels sing.
O ye beneath life’s crushing load,
Whose forms are bending low,
Who toil along the climbing way
With painful steps and slow;
Look now, for glad and golden hours
Come swiftly on the wing;
Oh rest beside the weary road
And hear the angels sing.
For lo! the days are hastening on,
By prophets seen of old,
When with the ever-circling years
Shall come the time foretold,
When the new heaven and earth shall own
The Prince of Peace, their King,
And the whole world send back the song
Which now the angels sing.
For Jewish culture, evening belongs to another day already and for Roman and Modern culture, midnight starts a new day. So the Birth of the Messiah falls on Midnight of December 24-25.

CHRISTMAS APOLOGETICS: Part 2 DECEMBER 25 Based on Judaeo-Christian Feast of Light, not on Pagan Worship of the Sol Invictus

THE GOSPEL OF JOHN AND THE JEWISH FESTIVAL OF LIGHT

John 1:9 “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

Jesus is declared by early Christians, following the SACRED SCRIPTURES, as THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.
Unknown to many, December 25 [which for the Jews starts in the evening of December 24 and continues for 8 days until January 1.] is the Feast of the KISLEV– THE JEWISH FESTIVAL OF LIGHT which originated from the Purification of the Temple during the time of Judas Maccabees who is a ‘type’ of Christ who came into this world to purify and sanctify us from sins. [cf. “Feast” in Merrill C. Tenney & Alexander Cruden, The Handy Bible Dictionary & Concordance. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Lampligher Books, Zondervan Publishing House, 1983. p. 55-56.]

Philippine Version of Christmas Lantern called ‘Parol’ which means ‘Light’ or ‘Guiding Light’ as in Parola.

The early Catholics were led by the Apostles who were Jews, thus they were affected by their Jewish customs of honoring God. The early Catholics found it appropriate to commemorate the Lord’s coming into the world in the Festival of Light wherein thousands of believers were joining in a solemn procession carrying candles and torches toward the Temple. The Bible clearly teaches that after the Ascension of the Lord the Apostles continued going into the Temple and worshipping there [Acts 3:1]. When the Temple was destroyed the Christians continued these lightings of candles in their homes, chapels and churches every December 24-25 to welcome the coming of the Messiah into their lives. Thus, the Jewish Festival of Light later became a Catholic Festival in honor of Jesus the Light of the World.

Christmas Candles glowing in the dark, manifesting Christ’s triumph over darkness and evil. God is the Light of Men.

7Now the first lot came forth to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah,

8The third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim,

9The fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin,

10The seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah,

11The ninth to Jeshuah, the tenth to Shecaniah,

12The eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim,

13The thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,

14The fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer,

15The seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Aphses,

16The nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezekel,

17The one and twentieth to Jachin, the two and twentieth to Gamul,

18The three and twentieth to Delaiah, the four and twentieth to Maaziah.

19These were the orderings of them in their service to come into the house of the LORD, according to their manner, under Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.

· When the Temple was destroyed in 70A the priestly course of Jehoiarib was serving. So, both the early Catholics and the Jewish scholars were competent in calculating the date of the offering to Zechariah which the Gospel of Luke specified as belonging to the turn of Abijah clan.

· The Rota System was unbroken from Zechariah [Luke 1:9] to the Destruction of the Temple under General Titus, this calculation has The Course of Abijah [Zechariah’s turn] occurring in the First Week of October. That was the time when Elizabeth conceived St. John the Baptist. The Gospel of Luke [Luke 1:36] states that 6 months later the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary in Nazareth. It was then that Mary conceived the Savior. So, it must fall on March if six month after October first – the month of March.

· It means that the Feast of Annunciation chosen by the Church is also correct [March 25] and 9 months after the Virgin gave birth to the Savior of the World. St. John Chrysostom [347-407] supported this calculation of the Temple Rota System when he wrote: “December, the eight of before the calends of January [December 25] or early January – The Birthday of the Unconquered.”

I want to repeat again that we Catholic Faith Defenders are always ready in defending the Catholic Truth against its enemies in spiritual means.”

Henry: “well alam ko ginagamit nyo ang amplified bible..and i tell you peter(grk petros)a large piece of rock and upon this Rock petra i will build my church a large piece of rock like gibraltar..means ng gibraltar na syang petra (Christ)pagkalakilaki basahin mo ang gibraltar..kung anong klasing bato”

Pariho lang po ang kahulugan ng PETROS (in Greek) sa KEPHA (in Aramaic) – “And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter f ).

Therefore sa Matt.

2.) Sa Matt. 16:18 ang Greek construction na “tautee tee” which means on “this” rock; on “this same” rock; or on “this very” rock. “Tautee tee” is a demonstrative construction in Greek, pointing to Peter, the subject of the sentence as the very rock on which Jesus builds His Church. The demonstrative (“tautee”) generally refers to its closest antecedent (“Petros”).

16:18 This rock (taute to petra) The nearest referent (for the pronoun “this”) in the context of Jesus’ statement is Peter, forming a wordplay on his name, Petros. While it is possible Jesus is referring to Peter’s confession of him as the Christ (v. 16), it seems more likely that Jesus is describing Peter and the other disciples’ future ministry as the foundation of the future church (cf. Eph. 2:20). As representative spokesman for the disciples, Peter was the first to preach to both Jews (Acts 2) and Gentiles (Acts 10) the truth that salvation is through Jesus (cf. Acts 2:36; 10:36). [petra, houtos]

Matthew’s narrative built on Mark’s but intensified the paradox of Peter’s actions by stressing the greatness of his confession before Jesus’ devastating rebuke (Matthew 16:13-23). When Simon Peter confessed, Jesus pronounced an exultant blessing on him, not because he had figured out Jesus’ identity himself, but because God had revealed it to him. Then Jesus spoke of Simon’s identity by using a play on words, “You are Peter (Greek, petros), and on this rock (petra) I will build my church and the powers of death will not prevail against it.” Simon had been called Peter since he was first introduced in Matthew, but now the meaning of that name was revealed. He was the one through whom God revealed Jesus’ identity, and thus, strengthened by that confession, he had become the rock on which Jesus would build his community. Further, Jesus promised to him “the keys of the kingdom of heaven,” and whatever he bound or loosed on earth would be bound or loosed in heaven. The words seem consciously enigmatic. Some Christians have taken them to mean that Peter was given authority over the Church as a whole; other Christians find this too broad an interpretation. In any event, Jesus’ words seem to foreshadow Peter’s role as a principal leader of the early Church.

The meaning is, “You are Peter, that is Rock, and upon this rock, that is, on you, Peter I will build my church.” Our Lord, speaking Aramaic, probably said, “And I say to you, you are Kepha, and on this kepha I will build my church.” Jesus, then, is promising Peter that he is going to build his church on him! I accept this view.

Nowadays a broad consensus has emerged which — in accordance with the words of the text — applies the promise to Peter as a person. On this point liberal (H. J. Holtzmann, E. Schweiger) and conservative (Cullmann, Flew) theologians agree, as well as representatives of Roman Catholic exegesis.

Although it is true that petros and petra can mean “stone” and “rock” respectively in earlier Greek, the distinction is largely confined to poetry. Moreover the underlying Aramaic is in this case unquestionable; and most probably kepha was used in both clauses (“you are kepha” and “on this kepha“), since the word was used both for a name and for a “rock”. The Peshitta (written in Syriac, a language cognate with Aramaic) makes no distinction between the words in the two clauses. The Greek makes the distinction between petros and petra simply because it is trying to preserve the pun, and in Greek the feminine petra could not very well serve as a masculine name.

The word Peter petros, meaning “rock” (Gk 4377), is masculine, and in Jesus’ follow-up statement he uses the feminine word petra (Gk 4376). On the basis of this change, many have attempted to avoid identifying Peter as the rock on which Jesus builds his church. Yet if it were not for Protestant reactions against extremes of Roman Catholic interpretations, it is doubtful whether many would have taken “rock” to be anything or anyone other than Peter.

The Saviour, no doubt, used in both clauses the Aramaic word kepha (hence the Greek Kephas applied to Simon, John i.42; comp. 1 Cor. i.12; iii.22; ix.5; Gal. ii.9), which means rock and is used both as a proper and a common noun…. The proper translation then would be: “Thou art Rock, and upon this rock”, etc.

Many insist on the distinction between the two Greek words, thou art Petros and on this petra, holding that if the rock had meant Peter, either petros or petra would have been used both times, and that petros signifies a separate stone or fragment broken off, while petra is the massive rock. But this distinction is almost entirely confined to poetry, the common prose word instead of petros being lithos; nor is the distinction uniformly observed.

But the main answer here is that our Lord undoubtedly spoke Aramaic, which has no known means of making such a distinction [between feminine petra and masculine petros in Greek]. The Peshitta (Western Aramaic) renders, “Thou are kipho, and on this kipho“. The Eastern Aramaic, spoken in Palestine in the time of Christ, must necessarily have said in like manner, “Thou are kepha, and on this kepha“…. Beza called attention to the fact that it is so likewise in French: “Thou art Pierre, and on this pierre“; and Nicholson suggests that we could say, “Thou art Piers (old English for Peter), and on this pier.”

By the words “this rock” Jesus means not himself, nor his teaching, nor God the Father, nor Peter’s confession, but Peter himself. The phrase is immediately preceded by a direct and emphatic reference to Peter. As Jesus identifies himself as the Builder, the rock on which he builds is most naturally understood as someone (or something) other than Jesus himself. The demonstrative this, whether denoting what is physically close to Jesus or what is literally close in Matthew, more naturally refers to Peter (v. 18) than to the more remote confession (v. 16). The link between the clauses of verse 18 is made yet stronger by the play on words, “You are Peter (Gk. Petros), and on this rock (Gk. petra) I will build my church”. As an apostle, Peter utters the confession of verse 16; as a confessor he receives the designation this rock from Jesus.

Acknowledging Jesus as The Christ illustrates the appropriateness of Simon’s nickname “Peter” (Petros = rock). This is not the first time Simon has been called Peter (cf. John 1:42), but it is certainly the most famous. Jesus’ declaration, “You are Peter”, parallels Peter’s confession, “You are the Christ”, as if to say, “Since you can tell me who I am, I will tell you who you are.” The expression “this rock” almost certainly refers to Peter, following immediately after his name, just as the words following “the Christ” in v. 16 applied to Jesus. The play on words in the Greek between Peter’s name (Petros) and the word “rock” (petra) makes sense only if Peter is the rock and if Jesus is about to explain the significance of this identification.

On this rock I will build my church: the word-play goes back to Aramaic tradition. It is on Peter himself, the confessor of his Messiahship, that Jesus will build the Church. The disciple becomes, as it were, the foundation stone of the community. Attempts to interpret the “rock” as something other than Peter in person (e.g., his faith, the truth revealed to him) are due to Protestant bias, and introduce to the statement a degree of subtlety which is highly unlikely.

The play on words in verse 18 indicates the Aramaic origin of the passage. The new name contains a promise. “Simon”, the fluctuating, impulsive disciple, will, by the grace of God, be the “rock” on which God will build the new community.

The natural reading of the passage, despite the necessary shift from Petros to petra required by the word play in the Greek (but not the Aramaic, where the same word kepha occurs in both places), is that it is Peter who is the rock upon which the church is to be built…. The frequent attempts that have been made, largely in the past, to deny this in favor of the view that the confession itself is the rock… seem to be largely motivated by Protestant prejudice against a passage that is used by the Roman Catholics to justify the papacy.

Sa Matt. 16:18 ang phrase na “on this rock” ay reperido kay Pedro. Catholic believes that other apostles are also foundation of the church and Christ Himself is the chief cornerstone (Efe. 2:20) but in Matt. 16:18 the only reference on the phrase “on this rock” is for Saint Peter.

3.) Matt. 16:18-19 This is a three-fold blessing of Peter – you are blessed, you are the rock on which I will build my Church, and you will receive the keys to the kingdom of heaven (not you are blessed for receiving Revelation, but you are still an insignificant little pebble, and yet I am going to give you the keys to the kingdom).

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=16&version=45

Matthew 16 (Amplified Bible)

18And I tell you, you are [e]Peter [Greek, Petros–a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra–a [f]huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the [g]infernal region) shall [h]not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].

Footnotes:

e. Matthew 16:18 The rock on which the church is built is traditionally interpreted as either Peter’s inspired confession of faith in Jesus as the Messiah, or it may be Peter himself (see Eph. 2:20).

http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=47&chapter=16&version=45

G-one: Wala po tayong problema sa nasambit ni Henry sa itaas na si Cristo ang pundasyon at bato sa Act. 4:10-11; si Cristo ang batong espiritwal 1 Cor. 10:4 (TNIV) and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” Pero itinatag ng Panginoong Hesus Cristo ang Kanyang Iglesia kay Pedro Matt. 16:18, John 1:42; at sa mga Apostol at mga Propeta Efe. 2:20 (TNIV) “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone.”

Halimbawa:

“BATO”

-DIOS ay Bato (2 Sam. 22:2-3)

-Cristo ay Bato (1 Cor. 10:4)

-Pedro ay Bato (John 1:42)

-Believers ay Bato (1 Ped. 2:5 Magandang Balita Biblia)

“PASTOL”

-Cristo ay Pastol (John 10:11) (1 Ped. 2:25)

-Apostles & Church Leaders ay Pastol {implicit} (Act. 20:28)

-Pedro ay Pastol {implicit} (John 21:15-17)

“LION”

-Crito (Rev. 5:5)

-Judah (Gen 49:9 CEV)

-Devil like a roaring lion (1 Pet. 5:8)

Ben Carreon, Page 126-127) at ang mga apostol at propeta (Efe. 2:20) (Catechism for Filipino Catholic {Junior Edition}, Number 482, Page 163) (Catholic Catechism By Fr. M. Guzman, Number 157, Page 39).

———————————-

Henry: “Isa.28:16 “therefore thus saith the Lord God behold i lay in Zion for a foundation a stone,a precious corner stone..a sure foundation.o ano baka mali si Isais nyan tigas kasi ng ulo nyo sinabi na ni pedro eh na si Cristo ang pundasyun ayaw nyo pang tanggapin o sige sagutin mo yan”

Therefore Saint Peter is the Foundation of the Church in Matt. 16:18.

Si Cristo ay ang espirituwal na BATO ng Iglesia (1 Cor. 10:4) “Yes, it is true that Christ is the leading cornerstone of the foundation (Eph. 2:20). Christ is himself, “the spiritual rock following them and the rock is Christ” (1 Cor. 10:4). This is a metaphorical Biblical expression which means that Christ is really the spiritual head and leader. However, it is willed by the Lord that there must be a visible leader in his Church and that leader be his vicar. Therefore those texts from 1 Cor. 3:11; Acts 4:11 do not contradict the Catholic teaching that Christ is the cornerstone of the foundation. However, we cannot also go against Christ’s will to appoint a visible head for His Church.”

“And now I say to you: you are Peter (or rock) and on this rock I will build My church; and never will the powers of death overcome it” (Matt. 16:18). Remember that Christ was the one who changed the name Simon into Cephas (Jn. 1:42). Cephas in Aramaic means ROCK- or BEDROCK, not an ordinary small stone rolling on the ground. Even in Greek, the word CEPHAS comes from Kephalaion which means fundamental or foundation (GREEK – SPANISH dictionary, Mendizabal, Page 298) Even though foundation is also defined by other people as faith of Peter but what is faith if there is no person holding on to it?” (Defense Catholic Truth by Bro. Socrates Fernandez, Page 59)

(Paano Ninyo Sasagutin by Fr. Ben Carreon, Page 126) <Emphasis added>

“The Catholic Church is apostolic because she was founded by Christ on the Apostles and in accordance with his divine will has always been and will always be governed by their lawful successors.” (Catholic Catechism By Fr. M. Guzman, Number 157, Page 39).

———————————-

———————————-

16:18-19). Kaya hindi po contradict ang Matt. 16:18 at Eph. 2:20 sa 1 Cor. 3:11.

Ang ibig sabihin sa “for other foundation can no man lay” ito po yong mga itinatag na Iglesia na tao lamang ang nag tatag, at hindi si Cristo (Act 17:24 KJV “God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands,”) -tulad na lamang ng 4th Watch PMCC na itinatag ni Arsenio Feriol dito sa Pilipinas.

ARE ALL IMAGES, IDOLS?

Defense: Catholic Truth

Archdiocese of Cebu

OBJECTION #1: It is clear in the bible which says, “Therefore, do not become corrupted; do not make an idol or a god carved in form of a man or of a woman” (Deut. 4:16). “You shall not bow down to them or serve them. For I, Yahweh, your God, I am a jealous God…” (Exodus 20:5). “I am Yahweh, that is my name, I will not give my glory to another or my praise to graven images” (Isa. 42:8).

Here, it is very clear that God prohibits the carving of images in the form of man or woman; what God allows to be carved are those images of cherubim or images of man (Ex. 25:18-19), but God never recommended those images to be worshipped.

ANSWER: Is the text used from Deut. 4:16 that God prohibits the making of any images of man or woman, a prohibition without any condition? Or the prohibition means that the images shall not be thought of as God? Because if you will say that the making of images, be it man or woman, is really prohibited without any condition, then, God is the first one who violated the law when He commanded Moses to make images of angels or cherubim.

If these angels are represented by the images allowed by Yahweh, these are images of men but with wings. Since the angels, upon appearing before Lot, were in form of men who are masculine (Gen. 19:1,5-8). Also, inside the temple or the House of God, these are images of cherubim and images of men: “He took me into the sanctuary…adorned with carved cherubs and palm tress and cherubs alternating, each cherub had two faces-the face of a man facing the palm tree on one side…” (Ezek. 41:1, 18-19). It is clear then that if all images represent false god, then God is the first one who erred when He commanded Moses to carve the images of angels (Ex. 25:18-19) and the image of a fiery serpent (Num. 21:8). But as we already know, God cannot commit any fault, therefore, it is our misinterpretation which led us to err in saying that all images represent false god. The Scripture teaches us what are false gods: “For we know an idol (false god) is without existence…” (1 Cor. 8:4). The Glory and praise of God can never be given to these idols which represent things which are non-existent. Therefore, it is very clear that the images of the angels and the saints are not idols because they are representing true beings.

OBJECTION #2: God also prohibits anyone to worship or to knell down in front of the images, even to procession the images, like Catholics are doing, because it is written: “Some pour out gold from their purses and with silver weight on the scales, they hire a goldsmith to make an image before which they bow and worship. They cry out to it, but it does not answer. It does not answer. It delivers no one from distress and disaster” (Isa. 46:6-7).

ANSWER: We have proven in the first answer that not all images are idols. This text quoted from Isaiah 46:6-7, wherein gold is made into an image, is worshipped and recognized as God can never be used to strike down the practice of Catholic sense there is no Catholic doctrine which teaches that images are being thought of as God. The passage from Exodus 20:5, which prohibits believer to bow down before images and served them is when this images are considered god. Proof to this is when the people of God in a procession of the ark, bearing the Ten Commandments, carried engraved stone tablets. Above the ark, two images of cherubim are placed (2 Samuel 6:2-5).

OBJECTION #3: He who casts his eyes on an idol or image is also worshipping idols for the Bible says, “But he who looks to the idols, does detestable things” (Ezequiel 18:12).

ANSWER: What is prohibited in Ezequiel 18:12 clearly cites the look of one’s eyes on the idols and here the idols mention in the scripture. “Bel bow down, Nebo stoops and their carriages weighed down with heavy images their idols borne by beasts of burden…” (Isa. 46:1).

But in the image of cherubim or that of a fiery serpent Yahweh had told Moses he is there to have a conversation with His people, there is no prohibition with that (Ex. 25:22). Anyone who looks at the graven fiery serpent, which represents the presence of God, will be cured from the poisonous bite of the snakes (Num. 21:8). “Moses pleaded for the people and Yahweh said to him, Moses a fiery serpent and a set on a standard; whoever has been bitten and then looks at it shall live.”

OBJECTION #4: One is also prohibited to kneel down before the image. “What was the answer of God? I kept for myself seven thousand who did not worship Baal” (Romans 11:4).

ANSWER: It is clear that the image prohibited by God to be worshipped is that of Baal who is a false god. However, Joshua, the man of God, while he prays, prostrates himself in front of the ark where the image is placed. The bible says, “Then, Joshua and all the leaders of Israel don their garments, put ashes on their heads remained prostate before the ark of Yahweh until evening” (Josh 7:6).

OBJECTION #5: It is unlawful to pray to images (1 Kings 18:26).

ANSWER: No Catholic who is normal prays to images. The Catholic doctrine says, “We are not praying to the crucifix or to the images or to the relics of the saints” (New Baltimore Catechism no. 3 page 132)

OBJECTION #6: It is unlawful to dance before images. “When he drew to the camp and saw the calf and dancing, his anger burst forth and he threw the slabs from his hands and shattered them against the base of the mountain” (Ex. 32:19).

ANSWER: Dancing before image is an act of idolatry. However, the man of God, King David, because of his abundant joy, danced before the ark of the Lord.

OBJECTION #7: It is unlawful to kiss an image. “Yet I will spare seven thousand in Israel who have not knelt before Baal whose lips have not kissed him” (1 Kings 19:18).

ANSWER: It is the same men who kissed by men before Baal, the false god. Therefore, it is unlawful before the true God (1 Kings 19:18).

OBJECTION #8: All these prohibitions stated in the Bible regarding images are really violated by the Catholics. Here, the Catholics says that the worship the tree. The Catholic Church in its liturgy during Good Friday sings this line: “Ecce Lignum crucis, in quo salus mundi pepindit. Venite Adoremus”. (Behold the wooden cross, upon which the one crucified is the salvation of the world. Come, let us adore Him). After this song, the priest carefully places the cross above the cotton foam, bows his head three times before the cross and on the third time, the priest kissed it, while two of his lay assistants will sing the following: “Crucem tuam, adoremus Domine” (Lord, we worship your cross).

ANSWER: Our act of worshipping the cross during Good Friday does not mean that it is the wooden cross that we pay homage to, but the one crucified on the cross, whom we worship. It is figure of speech called metonymy which is an act of addressing, possessing or owning as if one the owner. Like when we mention the “crown or throne” which represents the king.

Just like what Jacob did. “By faith Jacob, before he dead, blessed both children of Joseph and worshipped as he learned on his staff” (Heb. 11:21). This simply means that the one he worships is the one represented by the staff who is Christ. “Extol the Lord, our God; worship at his footstool. Holy is He, and mighty!” (Psalm 98:5, Catholic version). The one to be worshipped in this passage is the footstool but actually footstool here represents the Lord himself.

-Replied by: Brod. G-one T. Paisones-

àsa Act 1:20 ating makikita na ang greek word na πισκοπν ay ang apostles’ offices o ang office of the bishop.

http://strongsnumbers.com/greek/1984.htm

ST#1984. episkope (ep-is-kop-ay’) πισκοπν, πισκοπςthe office of a bishop (From episkeptomai; inspection (for relief); by implication, superintendence; specially, the Christian “episcopate” — the office of a “bishop”, bishoprick, visitation.)

With this clear evidence we can arrive with the correct conclusions that apostle’s office is office of a bishop and the office of a bishop is apostle’s office.

(https://catholicfaithdefender.wordpress.com/2008/11/25/tanong-galing-sa-member-ng-pmcc-4thwatch-henry-arganda/)

TAGALOG: Ang Dating Biblia (1905) http://adb.scripturetext.com/acts/1.htm

CEBUANO: Ang Biblia (KJV in Cebuano Translation)

PETER (Gr. Petros, rock) the most prominent of the 12 apostles in the Gospels and an outstanding leader in the early Christian church. NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible Page 448

PETER, St (d. 64-67), chief of the 12 Apostles, brother of St. Andrew. He was originally called Simon but Jesus gave him the Aramaic name “KEPHA”, meaning rock, translated into Greek as “Petros”. The New Webster Dictionary of the English Language (International Edition)- Page 751

Geneva Study Bible Commentary (http://bible.cc/acts/1-16.htm)

{7} Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

(7) Peter anticipates the offence that might be taken at the falling away of Judas the betrayer, showing that all things which happened to him were foretold by God.

Pakakatandaan po natin na ang MINISTRY ay ibig sabihin ay- “The act of ministering or serving (The Clergy)” –WEBSTER II New Riverside Pocket Dictionary, Page 171.

Ang Katungkulan dyan ay mababasa sa Greek na πισκοπν (EPISKOPEN) the office of a “bishop”http://strongsnumbers.com/greek/1984.htm

Kahit na grade 6 alam kung sino ang nanunungkulan sa office of a Bishop- kundi ang Bishop din o Obispo.

Para sa karagdagang ebidensya na ang πισκοπν ay office of a bishop:

The Greek New Testament Dictionary, Page 70: πισκοπν , πισκοπς f. visitation (of God’s presence among men); office; place of service; office of bishop (1 Tim. 3:1)

BISHOP =Gr. Episkopos, overseer- originally the principal officer of the local church, the other being the deacon or deacons (1 Tim, 3:1-7). The title elder or presbyter generally applied to the same man; “elder” referring to his age and dignity and “bishop” to his work of superintendence. As the church multiplied, the bishop of a larger church would be given special honor, and so gradually there grew up a hierarchy, all the way from presiding elders to bishops (over group of churches), then archbishop. (NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible Page 93)

APOSTLES Gr. Apostolos, messenger, envoy, ambassador). This title is used to describe various men in the NT. (1) Jesus himself is the ambassador of the Father (Heb. 3:1). (2) The twelve disciples were chosen and commissioned by Christ (Matt. 10:2, Mark 3:14; 6:30; Luke 6:13; 9:10; 11:49; 17:5; 22:14; 24:10). These men (with Matthias replacing Judas) proclaimed the gospel and established churches…. (3). Paul was commission by the resurrected Christ to be the messenger of the gentiles… There are others called who are called “apostles” in NT. James, the brother of the Lord Jesus (Gal. 1:19, 2:9); Barnabas (Act 14:4, 14); Andronicus and Junias (Rom. 16:7) and Silas (1 Thess. 2:6). (NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible Page 40)

Barnabus, Silvanus and Junias are given the title of Apotles later, but in derivative sense. They have a universal mission, given by Paul, to preach the gospel, and this seems to be the common trait of resemblance. Apotles also occur in the DIDACHE, 11:3-6, after which the term “Apotles” ceases to designate a special function. It is still used as general term for the prechers of the Gospel. (Intelligent Theology, Volume-2, Page 71, By: Piet Fransen, SJ)

Therefore it is very reasonable that the apostles had successors to teach, care and overseer all God’s peoples.

Analogy:

Ang namamahala ng office of the President ay ang Presidente.

Ang namamahala ng office of the bishop ay ang bishop o Obispo.

Logic:

Ang Obispo ay ang namamahala sa office of the bishop (Obispo)

But si Judas ay namahala sa office of the bishop = (Act 1:20-25)

Therefore si Judas ay Obispo

Si Judas a may kahalili = (Act 1:20-25)

The Jerusalem Bible

Eph. 2:19-20 So you are no longer aliens or foreign visitors: you are citizens like all the saints, and of God’s household. You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its foundations, and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone.

Lahat po ng Bible translation ay nagsasabing “Foundation of the Apostles”, at kahit na sa Bible in Basic English ang foundation ay isinalin ng BASE meaning the lowest part ; bottom (WEBSTER II New Riverside Pocket Dictionary, Page 24.

Pansinin po natin ang sentence na “You are part of a building that has the apostles and prophets for its foundations, and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone” sa Jerusalem Bible. Sa Eph. 2:19 nakasaad po doon na “you are citizens like all the saints, and of God’s household” ibig sabihin po nito na kasapi naho tayo sa house ng Diyos. Ang house of God ay ang Iglesia po (1 Tim. 3:15 KJV “But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”). We are part of the building (The Church) being built upon the foundation of apostles and prophets and Christ Jesus himself for its main cornerstone (Eph. 2:19-20).

Ang Act 20:28 (KJV) “Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers (Bishop), to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood (emphasize added).

Cristo lang ang nagtatag ng Kanyang iglisya -Mat. 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Naitatag N’ya sa kanyang kapanahonan ang Iglesia -Mat. 18:17 “And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell [it] unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as a heathen man and a publican.”

Ang Iglesia ay Kanyang (Jesus Cristo) Katawan –Col. 1:18 “And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all [things] he might have the preeminence.

Siya (Jesus Christ) ang manliligtas ng iglisya -Efe 5:23 “For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.”

Itinayo Nya ang Iglesia sa saligan ng mga apostol -Efe 2:20 “Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone:

Sasamahan Nya hanggang sa katapusan ng sanlibutan(WALANG PUTOL NA SASAMAHAN NI JESUS ANG IGLESIA) -Mat. 28:20 “Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.”

Bibigyan Nya ng patnubay ang Iglesia magpasawalang hanggang -John14:16-17 “And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; {14:17} [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

Espiritu Santo na magtuturo sa iglisya ng lahat ng bagay at magpapaalala ng lahat ng sinabi ni Cristo – John 14:26 “But the Comforter, [which is] the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

Therefore Ang tunay na iglisyang itinatag ni Cristo ay magpasahanggang sa ngayon ay narito pa at hindi ito kailan man tatalikod at mawawalang parang bula (Mat. 16:18) (Mat. 28:20) (Juan. 14:16-17, 26)

Psalm 109:8 (KJV) Let his days be few; [and] let another take his office.

Psalm 108:8 (Douay Rheims) “May His days be few: and his bishopric let another take”

Act 1:20 (KJV) “For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.”

ΠΡΑΞΕΙΣ 1:20 Greek NT: Tischendorf 8th Ed. with Strong’s Numbers

The Greek New Testament Dictionary, Page 70)

Brother Henry sa statement ayon po sa itaas ay para na rin kayong ginisa sa sarili ninyong mantika sapagkat ang sa Titus 1:5(KJV) “For this cause left I (Paul) thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I (Paul) had appointed thee: (emphasize added)”. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

At si Judas ay Obispo sapagkat sya ay ang namamahala sa office of the Bishop πισκοπν (Act 1:20).Si Mathias ang humalili kay hudas. Therefore Mathias is also a Bishop.

Dan. 2:44 “And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, [but] it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.”

Mat. 16:18 “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. {16:19} And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.—Dito malinaw na ang hula sa Daniel 2:44 ang katuparan ay ang tunay na Iglesiang itinatag ni Cristo na kahit ang kamatayan ay hindi ito kailan man madadaig ng kahit anung unos at kamatayan.

Si Pedro po ay Binigyan ng KEYS which are symbols of authority (At inamin ni brad Henry ito).

Sa Isa.22:21-22 “And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. {22:22} And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.”

Authority– (Gr. Exousia) The Legal and/or moral right to exercise of power, power that is rightly possessed. (NIV Compact Dictionary of the Bible Page 61)

Exousia –authority, right, liberty; ability, capability; supernatural power; ruling power, government, official; jurisdiction (Act 5:4). (The Greek New Testament Dictionary, Page 65)

My Catholic Faith (3rd Edition Page 97); Catholic Catechism (Revised Edition) By: Fr. M. Gusman #142.

John 21:15-17 “So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. {21:16} He saith to him again the second time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. {21:17} He saith unto him the third time, Simon, [son] of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. {21:18} Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry [thee] whither thou wouldest not. {21:19} This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.”

Luke 22:31-32 “And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired [to have] you, that he may sift [you] as wheat: {22:32} But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”
