THE GOSPEL OF JOHN AND THE JEWISH FESTIVAL OF LIGHT

John 1:9 “That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.”

Jesus is declared by early Christians, following the SACRED SCRIPTURES, as THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD.
Unknown to many, December 25 [which for the Jews starts in the evening of December 24 and continues for 8 days until January 1.] is the Feast of the KISLEV– THE JEWISH FESTIVAL OF LIGHT which originated from the Purification of the Temple during the time of Judas Maccabees who is a ‘type’ of Christ who came into this world to purify and sanctify us from sins. [cf. “Feast” in Merrill C. Tenney & Alexander Cruden, The Handy Bible Dictionary & Concordance. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Lampligher Books, Zondervan Publishing House, 1983. p. 55-56.]

The early Catholics were led by the Apostles who were Jews, thus they were affected by their Jewish customs of honoring God. The early Catholics found it appropriate to commemorate the Lord’s coming into the world in the Festival of Light wherein thousands of believers were joining in a solemn procession carrying candles and torches toward the Temple. The Bible clearly teaches that after the Ascension of the Lord the Apostles continued going into the Temple and worshipping there [Acts 3:1]. When the Temple was destroyed the Christians continued these lightings of candles in their homes, chapels and churches every December 24-25 to welcome the coming of the Messiah into their lives. Thus, the Jewish Festival of Light later became a Catholic Festival in honor of Jesus the Light of the World.
